Abstract

Introduction: Being physically fit is essential for lowering the risk of illness and enhancing longevity. While Body Mass Index (BMI) is frequently used to evaluate body composition, Hand Grip Strength (HGS) and Hand Grip Endurance (HGE) are important indicators of general well-being. Goal: To assess BMI, HGS, and HGE and ascertain how they correlate in a selected group of subjects. Methods: Fifty participants between the ages of 20 and 40 years participated in a comparative cross-sectional study at the Department of Physiology, Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences, Madikeri. Participants were divided into three BMI groups after anthropometric measurements were taken. A hand grip dynamometer was used to measure HGS and HGE. Individuals with disabilities, smokers, alcoholics, substance abusers, and those on long-term medications were excluded from the study. Results: The mean age of underweight, normal-weight, and overweight subjects was 35.50 ± 3.54, 24.67 ± 5.00, and 26.96 ± 5.46 years, respectively. HGS varied significantly between groups (p<0.001), with normal-weight subjects having the high values. HGE also differed significantly (p<0.001), but no significant difference was observed between underweight and normal-weight subjects. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a significant negative moderate correlation of BMI with HGS (r = -0.55, p<0.001) and HGE (r = -0.44, p=0.002). Conclusion: Higher BMI is associated with reduced HGS and HGE, indicating an inverse relationship. Since handgrip strength and endurance are predictors of overall health, their decline with increasing BMI highlights potential risks for non-communicable diseases.
